CITY GUIDES

DOCUMENTING INDEPENDENT RESTAURANTS ACROSS AMERICA

Pig's Pick

WARNING: CULINARY ADVENTURE

Disclaimer, if things like exotic flavors, culinary roulette or dirty counters scare you, then turn away now; this site is not for everybody. But if you're looking for a little culinary adventure in your life, then my guides are the map to the unbeaten path you’re looking for.

Before I travel, I do hours of research, searching out where the locals eat, the places chefs are talking about, and scouring social media posts about that city. I create my pig’s list of places worth going to and map it out weeks in advance. If all I wanted was to go to the most expensive top rated restaurant that would be easy, but I’m searching for more. I’m looking for America’s cuisine: the great local BBQ joint with an hour long line, or the little ramen shop in the Asian district with people just waiting their turn to belly up to the counter and order a bowl of piping hot Japanese noodles at 10 pm on a Tuesday night. I'm looking for the unsung great independent.

These TRAVEL GUIDES are sections of my personal notes; it is how I organize myself before I head out to eat. Each year I explore over 450 independent restaurants, and after rating them on four criteria, approximately 90 make the Pig’s Picks section. The restaurants never know I’m there or pay for the review, so you can trust that if a restaurant made my list, they have something worth going back for.
